Vladimir I

Vladimir I
   Prince of Kiev (q.v.) from 980-1015; saint; son of Svjatoslav (q.v.). In 988 he contributed 6,000 Varangians (q.v.) to help Basil II (q.v.) subdue the rebel Bardas Phokas (q.v.). In return he was rewarded with a Byzantine bride, Basil II's sister Anna (q.v.). Vladimir's marriage to Anna was an opportunity to greatly enhance his prestige, which is why he took the daring step of converting to Christianity (988) in order to marry her. It was more than just a marriage, for it brought Kievan Rus (q.v.) into the orbit of Byzantine civilization. It can be seen as the single greatest historical event in Kievan Rus history, perhaps in the entirety of Russian history.
